Seed

No more than the one

in the web, that world

inside the autumn squash,

senses the world outside

firm flesh, thick-slick skin,

tangled green umbilical cord,

soil from which it feeds,

grows, sun from which it draws,

swells, air it dwells in,

water-life from bulging clouds.

Does it know? That sky,

atmosphere, beyond, the possibility

within, ever-expanding.
